In a recent announcement, Walmart unveiled plans to significantly expand its electric vehicle (EV) charging network by installing fast-charging stations at “thousands” of Walmart and Sam’s Club locations across the United States. The retail giant aims to complete the implementation by 2030, providing customers with increased access to convenient EV charging options.

Although Walmart has not disclosed the exact number of its approximately 5,300 locations that will be added to the charging network, it is clear that this expansion will substantially boost its existing network of 1,300 EV fast-charging stations. These stations are currently installed at more than 280 retail stores and affiliated facilities.

Vishal Kapadia, Senior Vice President of Energy Transformation at Walmart, highlighted the company’s unique position to deliver accessible charging options to a broad audience. He stated, “With a store or club located within 10 miles of approximately 90% of Americans, we are uniquely positioned to deliver a convenient charging option that will help make EV ownership possible whether people live in rural, suburban, or urban areas.” Kapadia believes that easy access to on-the-go charging will be a game-changer for consumers who have been hesitant to invest in an EV.

As Walmart looks to partner with energy suppliers for this ambitious project, it is reportedly considering various providers. Previously, the company has collaborated with EVgo and Volkswagen’s Electrify America. Walmart has pledged to install four chargers at each participating store, aiming to keep energy prices low for its customers. However, specific cost estimates have not been provided.

This substantial expansion of Walmart’s EV charging network will undoubtedly benefit both the company and its customers, as it contributes to the growing adoption of electric vehicles across the country. By providing accessible and affordable charging options at thousands of retail locations, Walmart is taking a significant step toward promoting sustainable transportation and supporting the transition to a greener future.
