LG Electronics (LGE) has issued a recall of four models of its 86-inch 4K TVs due to concerns about tip-over hazards. The recall affects 52,000 TVs sold between March and September 2022 with the model numbers 86NANO75UQA, 86UQ7070ZUD, 86UQ7590PUD, and 86NANO75UQA. The recall notice from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says the TVs “can become unstable while on the assembled stand, posing serious tip-over and entrapment hazards that can result in injuries or death to children and others.”
The recall applies to TVs sold by Amazon, Best Buy, Costco, Walmart, and other brick-and-mortar stores for $1,100 to $1,900. The recall notice advises customers to detach the TV from its stand and place it somewhere safe and away from kids. Customers are also instructed to contact LGE “for instructions on how to inspect the unit and to obtain replacement screws and stand parts, including help from a technician for a free repair.”
In a statement to Digital Trends, LG said that the LED TVs, which weigh up to 101.2 pounds with stands, aren’t defective on their own. The TVs only pose a risk if the stand isn’t installed properly, LG said. Otherwise, the TV can put too much strain on the stand, potentially damaging it.
“LGE believes the product is not defective and does not present a substantial product hazard or unreasonable risk… Despite there being no issue with the product itself, we have been taking steps to proactively inform and offer support to owners of the relevant TV models in order to avoid any risk of damage, either to the TV or the customer’s living environment,” LG’s statement to Digital Trends said.
LG is offering customers written and video instructions so they can determine whether their stand is installed correctly. “Additional measures, such as technician visits and new screws or stand elements, have also been considered, according to each situation,” LG said.
This recall is a reminder of the importance of properly installing and securing large appliances and furniture in homes. It’s crucial that we follow the manufacturer’s instructions and recommendations when it comes to setup and safety to prevent any accidents or injuries. Consumers who have purchased one of the affected models are advised to contact LG for further instructions on how to proceed with the recall.
