Google to Pay $20 Million Settlement to Indiana Over Location Tracking Practices

Google has reached a settlement with the state of Indiana, agreeing to pay $20 million to resolve a lawsuit over allegations of deceptive location tracking practices. The lawsuit was filed by Indiana’s Attorney General, Todd Rokita, after negotiations with a coalition of other state attorneys general stalled. In November, the coalition reached a settlement of $391.5 million with Google. However, the separate lawsuit brought by Indiana resulted in the state receiving around double the amount it would have received under the original deal. The lawsuit claimed that Google used location data to build detailed user profiles and target ads, and that the company had deceived and misled users about its practices since 2014. Google did not admit to any wrongdoing as part of the settlement with Indiana. In response to the lawsuit, the company stated that it had introduced more transparency and tools to help users manage their data and minimize the data collected by the company.
